Did you know a 529 can be used to pay student loans?

Included in the SECURE Act of 2019 is a little talked about provision that allows families to now use 529 college savings plans to pay up to $10,000 toward a borrowers student loans. There are some rules you need to know.

Limits

A borrower is only allowed to receive a maximum $10,000 in total qualified distributions to repay the borrower's qualified student loan debt. A borrower also can't get around the $10,000 limit by having more than one 529 plan. Remember, this is a lifetime limit, not an annual limit.
